About the Maidenhead System
The Maidenhead Locator System divides the world into a hierarchy of fields, squares, and subsquares. The first two characters (a letter pair, A–R) define the field, spanning 20° longitude × 10° latitude. The next two digits (0–9) subdivide into the square, each covering 2° × 1°. A 6-character locator adds two more letters (a–x) for the subsquare, narrowing to 5′ × 2.5′.
